Ollie

The ollie is one of the first tricks you will learn on your board.

  1. Start by finding a flat area

  2. Start moving on your board until you are going pretty fast.

  3. When you are rolling, move your back foot on the tail, and your front foot near the middle of the board.

  4. Bend your knees into a crouched position so you can get a good jump.
    Now for the trick.

  5. Kick the tail onto the ground and at the same time slide your front foot up the deck while jumping from your crouched position.

  1. Make sure you stay over the board. At the top of the ollie you should be centred on the back of the board with your knees bent again ready for the landing.

  2. When you land your back foot should still be on the
tail but not as far back as when you started, and your
front foot should be directly over the front truck.

That's it you can now ollie. Take it easy at first to get the technique right. Later on you can try ollieing up and down and over stuff.

Switch Ollie (Fakie Ollie)

A switch or fakie trick is the same technically as the trick itself but with your feet in the opposite positions to where they normally are. Huh?

If you usually skate with your right foot in front and left foot in back then to switch is to skate with your left foot in front and right foot in back.

So, to do a switch ollie you will first have to get used to skating the opposite to normal and when you are comfortable with it follow the same steps as the ollie above.

50/50 Grind

The 50-50 is the first grind or slide you will learn. It means you will jump up onto something with an edge such as a step or footpath edge or even a hand rail if you can get that high, and then slide along it with the edge or rail running between your wheels. Start off with something low and then as you get better grind on objects higher off the grind.

  1. Start by approaching the object you will grind on at a shallow angle. In other words don't head straight for it but come in from the side.

  1. Ollie up onto the edge. At first you may need to put your back foot on the edge you are grinding to help get the back truck onto the edge. You can then push along with that back foot at first until you get the hang of it.

  2. Cruise along with half your wheels on the object, such as the step, and half them off it.

  3. When you feel your slide slowing down too much move your weight to the back of the board.

Rose from Brazil

  1. Kick the back of the board so the front rises up and off the edge.

  2. Now let the front of the board drop and once you hit the flat just roll away.

That's the easy grind. Take your time and get good at it before moving on to something difficult like a hand rail. Remember for a rail you won't be able to use your back leg to push off from the rail so it's much tougher.

The most important thing is to have enough speed to get a decent ollie onto the edge you are grinding.

Kick Flip

  1. Start by rolling forward on your board getting ready to ollie with your back foot right on the tail and your forward foot in about the middle of the deck. Crouch down ready to spring.

  2. Kick the tail down and pop from your crouch. The front of your board is now in the air so drag your right foot up the board towards the front lifting it off the ground.

  3. As your foot gets close to the top of the deck flick it towards the same side as the heel of your back foot. Make sure your back foot is off the deck for this part.

  4. Now complete the flick by keeping your front foot moving out and away from the board. That's the kick bit. Keep your back foot up and out of the way to allow the board to complete it's flip.

  5. As the top of the board comes back around from underneath get both feet over the board ready for the landing.

  6. Remember the board is still flipping so get your rear foot onto it to stop the flip and have both feet on there before it hits the ground again.

Getting a good takeoff is very important so make sure you have the ollie down good before moving to the kickflip.
